Title: Global Forests – from Ecosystems Management to Energy Landscapes

Abstract:
Forests all over the planet are under pressure due to overuse,
deforestation for agriculture and general climate change. On the other
hand, forests provide a wide range of ecosystems which we cannot afford
to lose. One example is the provision of energy. Models used for IPCC
predict an extraponential increase in the demand for bioenergy over
this century which highlights the significant tasks put on science to
come up with possible solutions to this challenge. One possible way to
go is to improve ecosystem management. However, this requires
assessments from local up to global scale coming along with additional
hurdles such as data availability or political agreement on various
levels – e.g. a new Kyoto Protocol, etc. This presentation will provide
insight into the development of global forests and its multiple purpose
management in order to meet the needs of an ever growing population with
respect to many ecosystem services. Furthermore, the talk will present
new ideas and assessments, including possible pathways forward that
tackle challenges and opportunities.
