Job Announcement, IFES-GCOE staffs
We recruit eight staff members in the Graduate School of Environmental Science, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. Employment is along the initiative of "Establishment of Center for Integrated Field Environmental Science: Proposing Adaptive Strategies for Earth System" (IFES) as a Global Center for Excellence Program (GCOE).
Position:
GCOE Associate Professor, or GCOE Assistant Professor with fixed-term contract
Term of employment:
Positions should be filled by 1 April 2009, for the period until March
2011, extendable until March 2013.
Mission fields:
Candidates are expected to have research experience of environmental
science (based on one of earth science, bioscience, and chemical science),
and are willing to carry out research, education, and/or support of the
IFES-COE relevant to following activities:
(a)
Promotion Office of Overseas Research and Student Exchange (3 staffs)
Promotion of research and education at overseas monitoring stations set
in Siberia, Mongolia, and Indonesia etc., liaison between the promotion
office and overseas stations, planning and management of international
summer schools, strategic support to foreign research students.
(b) Promotion Office of Regional Education and Outreach (2 staffs)
Establishment of the employment-support center, planning and management
of open courses for citizen, training students for environment
communicators, and promoting internship programs. Candidates are
expected to have experience not only in research but also in practice.
(c) Task Force of Integrated Modeling (2 staffs)
Developing regional integrated models on core-field sites in Hokkaido,
Siberia, Mongolia, Indonesia, etc., and supporting the use of datasets
on global change. Candidates are expected to have modeling expertise on
either regional meteorology, terrestrial ecosystems, or hydrology, and
are willing to develop integrated models including social aspects.
(d) Project Support Unit (1 staff)
Promotion of integrated research programs such as GCOE, collaborating
with the administration office of the graduate school, supporting
project leaders, coordinating budget and paper works of projects.

GCOE staffs can supervise research students at Graduate School of
Environmental Science. GCOE staffs will keep 20% activity to individual
research, for that they get ca. 0.8 million-yen research budget from
