IFES-GCOE Global COE Program "Establishment of Center for Integrated Field Environmental Science"
Graduate School of Environmental Science & Division of Environmental Resources, Graduate School of Agriculture
Hokkaido University

Our Plan

The main objective of our Global COE (Center of Excellence) program is to establish "Integrated field environmental science (IFES)" which is an interdisciplinary science field contributing Earth System Science (EES). One of the important purposes of our COE activities is to foster researchers, who would be able to pioneer one's multiple career passes not only in the academic field but also public fields for the environmental policy, educational institutes, and general business corporations, for contributing to Earth System Science.

Three promotion offices (Overseas Research & student exchange, International Network & Training, and Regional Education &Outreach), and three task forces (Integrated Modeling, International Antarctic Institute, and Laboratory short courses) are organized in our COE.

Science Plan: Integrated Field Environmental Science

Combining field observation and modeling is a challenge to develop a new research field to propose adaptation strategy. Field observations are essential to clarify region-specific processes, which may be important, not only for the regional environment but also globally due to feedback mechanism. Regional model which can simulate the region-specific processes is also necessary for the projection. Goal of the Integrated Field Environmental Science is to submit proposals to regional society, government, or scientific communities for adaptation strategies for Earth System
