Abstract:
\nLong-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (lcPUFAs) are important nutrients that play a role in the development of the human brain and eye. They are made with high efficiency by a number of marine organisms using a widely conserved set of enzymes that assemble the fatty acid product by the joint action of protein domains that are joined by a polypeptide linker. Our group at the University of Puerto Rico has attempted to shed light on how these conjoined or tandem enzymes drive this unique biosynthetic process. It is our hope that by elucidating the inner workings of this peculiar biosynthesis machinery, we will be able to harness its activity for industrial production of lcPUFAs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
