\nAbstract:
\nForests all over the planet are under pressure due to overuse,
\ndeforestation for agriculture and general climate change. On the other
\nhand, forests provide a wide range of ecosystems which we cannot afford
\nto lose. One example is the provision of energy. Models used for IPCC
\npredict an extraponential increase in the demand for bioenergy over
\nthis century which highlights the significant tasks put on science to
\ncome up with possible solutions to this challenge. One possible way to
\ngo is to improve ecosystem management. However, this requires
\nassessments from local up to global scale coming along with additional
\nhurdles such as data availability or political agreement on various
\nlevels – e.g. a new Kyoto Protocol, etc. This presentation will provide
\ninsight into the development of global forests and its multiple purpose
\nmanagement in order to meet the needs of an ever growing population with
\nrespect to many ecosystem services. Furthermore, the talk will present
\nnew ideas and assessments, including possible pathways forward that
