\nTitle\uff1aSouthern Ocean ecosystems in a changing climate

\nAbstract: This talk will discuss the structure of Southern Ocean ecosystems,
\nparticularly the microbial system, and how predicted changes in the
\nenvironment may affect productivity. Research approaches to understanding
\nand detecting changes in microbial system, from shipboard monitoring,
\nsurveys, process studies in minicosms, to satellite observations, will be
\ndiscussed, along with recent results. Consequences for grazing animals and
\nother dependent species will also be considered.<\/p>\n

\nTitle\uff1aCalibration and Validation Activities for Next-Generation
\n NASA Missions
\nSpeaker\uff1aStanford B. Hooker (NASA\/GSFC, USA)
\nAbstract:: As part of an emphasis on innovation in global observations of
\nthe Earth system from space, NASA has a current- and next-generation
\nrequirement to collect high-quality in situ data for the vicarious
\ncalibration of ocean color satellite sensors and to validate the algorithms
\nthat use the remote sensing data.
\nPresently, satellite missions emphasize the open ocean and the estimation of
\nthe chlorophyll concentration using primarily the visible (VIS) and
\nnear-infrared (NIR) parts of the spectrum. Future sensors are expected to
\nprovide additional water properties and atmospheric data products from an
\nexpanded spectral band set spanning the ultraviolet (UV) to the short wave
\ninfrared (SWIR).
\nThe joint oceanic-atmospheric perspective combined with the enhanced
\nspectral response allows for improved capabilities in shallower waters and
\nbetter atmospheric correction. The increased mission sophistication places
\nsignificant demands on calibration and validation activities, however,
\nbecause of the greater optical complexity and heterogeneity of coastal
\nwaters. This presentation summarizes the new hardware and software
\ntechnologies being developed to provide baseline information applicable to
\nnext-generation missions, like SGLI, PACE, and ACE, while simultaneously
\ncontributing to the requirements of current satellite sensors (e.g., MODIS).
\nThe emphasis is on modular designs, commercial availability, mobile
\nsolutions, and public access, so the global community can participate cost
\neffectively. For example, the modularity allows the ground-truth system to
\nexpand from a lower-cost starter system as resources evolve. Sensitivity
\nstudies are being performed to establish observational uncertainties and the
\nadvantages of instrument configurations, particularly with respect to
\nspectral end-member analyses (e.g., UV-NIR versus VIS). New in situ
\nradiometric observing systems with state-of-the-art data processing
\ncapabilities to support cost-conscious oceanic and atmospheric research are
