18-24 July: Field and modeling training

|16-17 July| 18-24 July| 25-26 July|

We carried out the field experiments in country side (See the map in below) of Mongolia and modeling training divided into 5 groups for each theme.

Distribution map of field training

Group1:Permafrost variation and its impact

We carried out the permafrost analysis by drilling, physical composition survey by electrical resistivity tomography, and measuring the area of lakes by GPS at Chuluut river basin in westernMongolia. We clarified the distribution of permafrost across the river from north-face slope to south-face.

Drilling

Electrical resistivity tomography survey

Group2:Past and present status of forest

We carried out the survey on comparison between fire site and natural site for stand structure and soil respiration (CO₂ emission by microbial decomposition of soil) at experimental forest of NUM and vicinity in Batsumer village in central province of Mongolia. We clarified the difference on stand structure and soil respiration between fired site and natural site.

Forest fire site survey

Soil respiration observation

Group3:Pasture degradation and socio-economic background

We carried out the survey on pasture condition as well as interview to the herder about their nomadic life at Altanbulag village, Husty national park and Batsumber village in Tuv province of Mongolia. We clarified the relation between the location of nomadic camp and pasture degradation.

Pasture condition survey

Interview to the herder

Group4:Regional scale hydrometeorology

We carried out the training course for regional climate modeling at Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology in Ulaanbataar. The model almost reproduced the observed results for temperature. To learn the field observation, we visited the meteorological radar site and river discharge observation site of Terlj river.

Modeling training

River discharge observation

Group5:Environmental pollution

We carried out the survey on mining status and waste water treatment using soil and water sampling at gold mine by small scale and big company of Zaamar village in Tuv provice of Mongolia. We also carried out the survey on the sampling for water and soil as well as interview to the copper and molybdenum mining company in Erdenet.
