Annual meetings 2011 of International Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER) was held from 5th to 9th September, 2011 at Graduate School of Environmental Science, Hokkaido University, Japan. ILTER is a global network of research site that focus on site-based ecological research and education with long-term perspective to evaluate the structure and function of a wide array of ecosystems worldwide exposed of human-induced global environmental change and disturbance and solve the environmental change issue. The 43 national networks currently belong to ILTER network. ILTER Annual Meetings 2011 was organized by ILTER and co-organized by Japan Long-term Ecological Research Network (JaLTER), IFES-GCOE of Hokkaido University, Ecosystem Adaptability GCOE of Tohoku University and Global Land Project (GLP) Sapporo Nodal Office. 92 participants (43 national network representatives and 49 domestic researchers from JaLTER community) attended in this events;  science programs (plenary talks, parallel workshop, group discussion, and poster session), field excursion to JaLTER site (Tomakomai Experimental Forest and Akkeshi Marine Station), regional meetings and coordinating committee meeting. In addition, pre-workshop entitled “Life history regulation of forest trees: towards cross-biome analysis” was held on September 2nd and the product of the workshop was reported at the symposium.

ILTER science program “Global change science and LTER” had plenary session and parallel workshop, followed by discussion for latest research achievement in long-term ecological research network and future direction for global sustainability, and poster session had 37 presentations. In the science symposium “Vulnerability, Sustainability, and Resilience of Ecosystem” and coordinating committee meeting, we discussed for future direction for global sustainability from the ILTER’ perspectives with the strength of network containing a wide array of ecosystems, and strategy, such as collaboration with related international global sustainability research project (e.g.: ICSU, GEOSS, UNESCO, GLP). Furthermore, education program for next generation, such as international summer school, was also reported and its importance was confirmed.
