Shall we learn long term ecological research at an international LTER site in U.S.? (Deadline is July 22nd)

Ecosystems are complex system and consist of interactions between physical environment and organisms. They have ecosystem function governed by biogeochemical processes of energy and substances and provide ecosystem services to humans. On the other hand, ecosystem function and processes have large temporal and spatial variations due to changing environmental factors, structure and human activity. In addition, it would be urgent challenge to clarify the effects of global environment change. Thus, long term and networking ecosystem research would be necessary. Furthermore, developing database would be important for this task.
We aim to encourage students to promote long term ecological research with an international perspective by collecting information and exchanging opinions about ecology and database, and feeling fields, which is so different from that of Hokkaido.

Schedule, content & costs

Days:13 - 22 September, 2010
Content:We will visit H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest(Oregon), which is a famous LTER site and exchange information about the studies and use of database. Integrated study regarding of biogeochemistry, hydrology, geology and ecology in forest and stream ecosystems are studied for a long time. Especially they focus on the linkage between forest management and ecosystem function.
Costs: The organizer can provide financial support for your flight and accommodation at H.J. Andrews. Meal will not be provided.

Application: Targeted applicants are basically Ph.D student (Graduate School of Environmental Science & Division of Environmental Resources, Graduate School of Agriculture, Hokkaido University). Application forms need to be submitted to (caribu(at)fsc.hokudai.ac.jp) no later than 17:00 on 22 July 2010. Two participants will be selected based on information provided in the application. It is desirable that participants have passport at a time of 22 July and students from contries which applied Visa Waiver Program: VWP for getting into U.S.
can apply. Participants are required to join the workshop after back to Japan and submit report.
