INTRODUCTION & SCOPE
The purposes of this symposium are to clarify the nature and ecological
features of the tropical peat swamp areas, identify the underlying
issues, and find solutions for them. It covers the topics of both basic
science and applied issues in five areas of nature and culture,
biodiversity and phylogeography, ecosystem characteristics, human
impact, and socio-culture and human dimension in tropical peat land.
This is the symposium for synthesis of the past ten-year collaboration
between Japan and Indonesia on the tropical peat swamp ecosystems in
the island of the hotspot of global biodiversity. The symposium will
give the scientific view of less known but important ecosystem using
modern techniques and interdisciplinary approach.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The organizers cordially invite original scientific and policy papers addressing
the symposium theme for either oral or poster presentation. Those people
who are interested in the symposium are invited to submit the title, author(s),
address(es) (institution(s) and e-mail address(es)) and abstract (not more
than 500 words) of the oral or poster presentation to the contact person
of the symposium.
<<Oral Presentation>>
The duration of an oral paper presentation is 15 minutes, including
time for questions. LCD and overhead projectors will be provided
<<Posters>>
The authors concerned are requested to prepare their own posters. One standard poster board of 0.7 m x 1.0 m (a size of ISO B1 or an intermediate of ISO A1 and A0) will be provided for each poster. Poster board assignment will be given to each author on registration.
PLACE AND DATE
The symposium will be held at Salak Hotel, Jl. Ir. H. Juanda No. 8, Bogor,
Indonesia. The symposium will run from 20 - 21 September 2006.

English will be the official language of the symposium and no translation service will be available.
PUBLICATION
Papers will be published in the proceeding of the symposium, and some selected
papers will also be published in the journal TROPICS.
GENERAL INFORMATION
<<Location>>
Bogor is well-known as a Rain City. It is located 45 km south of Jakarta. It treasures some beautiful tourist spots such as Bogor Botanical Garden and Bogor Presidential Palace.
The most important features to be highlighted in Bogor are (1) the amazing thunderstorm which happens almost everyday, (2) the eldest education and research city of agriculture in Indonesia.
<<Currency and Banking>>
The official Indonesian currency is Rupiah (Rp). The exchange rate is approximately US$1 = Rp. 8,500 - or Japanese Yen 1 = Rp. 72. Banking hours are from 9 am to 2 pm Monday to Friday. Major credit cards are acceptable in most shopping centers and hotels.
