HU-SNU Joint Symposium, Satellite Session on Environmental Studies
"Towards a New School of Environmental Sciences"
We hold a Satellite Sessin with the Graduate School of Environmental Studies,
Seoul National Univ. on July 9, 2004.
<<Purposes>>
Hokkaido University has devoted itself on global environmental sciences,
and has proposed to open a new graduate school of environmental sciences.
The university tries to develop a more flexible system by dividing it into
an education system (Graduate School) and a research system (Research Branch).
The first attempt is the new graduate school, which has a basis on the
current Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science (GSEES) along with
the Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere and the Graduate School
of Fisheries Sciences. As one of the 21st Century Centers of Excellence
at Hokkaido University, GSEES and the Institute of Low Temperature Science
have been working towards better understanding of global change as well
as innovation and examination of a method to avoid an abrupt change, which
could occur as a consequence of positive feedback between the geosphere
and the biosphere. For this symposium, Seoul National University sends
participants from the Graduate School of Environmental Studies (GSES).
GSES is playing a leading role in environmental sciences in Korea, and
held a joint symposium with GSEES at Seoul last year as part of the bilateral
program between Hokkaido University and Seoul National University. At this
satellite symposium, we expect to hear new results of environmental studies,
such as interactions between regional ecosystems and global change, and
observation and remediation of pollutants. This symposium would also be
an excellent opportunity for future collaborations among the organizations
towards the establishment of the new graduate school of environmental sciences
in Hokkaido University.
