Shiro Tsuyuzaki

Associate Professor, D.Sc.

(Plant Community Ecology, Conservation of Ecosystems)

Ο When I was a student, I wondered from Faculty of Science to Graduate School of Environmental Science, and then from GSES to Institute of Low Temperature Science. All of those facilities are distributed in the campus of Hokkaido University. I got a job in Niigata Pref., and now I am in this graduate school. Meanwhile, I got Ph.D. (D.Sc., sensu strict) by researches on volcanic succession that is one of the subjects of plant community ecology.

Ο I have researched not only volcanic succession but also the other disturbed areas, such as skislopes and post-mining areas. I enjoy these researches with friends and competitors.

Ο After the research of the largest wetland in China, I went to long-term overseas surveys for three times (USA, Canada and Australia). The researches keep going with foreign collaborators.

Ο I feel "global warming" when I research volcanic succession (if you want to know this reason, please ask me directly), "environmental deterioration and rehabilitation" when I research vegetation on skislopes and post-mining areas, and "ozone layer depletion and UV" when I was in Western Australia.

Ο I am trying to integrate successional theories on the basis of disturbance. To figure it out, I have a plan to research disturbed areas more. Let's see such "cool" areas with me!

Ο My major technique to approach the goal of the study is field work. Somebody says, that means "only power, with no brain." I do not like complex technicality, or am not good at handling it.
