題目:Land Use and Soil Management Challenges under Cocoa Production in Nigeria
要旨:
Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) was the mainstay of Nigeria's economy before the
discovery of petroleum. Cocoa has a great potential to boost the economy
of the country if given the needed policy attention. There is need to
intensify cocoa production by increasing the cultivated land area and
through increase in yield by rehabilitating old and non-productive cocoa
plantation. Expansion of urban areas on agricultural lands, inherently
infertile soil with low organic matter and cation exchange capacity, and
soil nutrient depletion through pod harvest are the major challenges
confronting cocoa production. The mandates of CRIN include improvement
of agronomic practices in various cocoa growing ecologies in Nigeria.
Recent soil fertility evaluation indicated that phosphorus is a major
limiting factor across the country. Farmers are being sensitized to use
fertilizer to replace the nutrients "mined" through pod harvest. Organic
and organo-mineral fertilizers derived from cocoa pod husk have been
developed as a substitute for the scarce and expensive inorganic
fertilizers. For sustainable cocoa production and environmental
protection, present research strategy focuses on the production of
organic cocoa with minimal use of chemicals.
Keywords: Land use, soil management, cocoa, cocoa pod husk, soil fertility.
