Pre-meeting tour to Akkeshi Marine Station
A pre-meeting tour (with a short scientific
session) will be held between 2nd-4th September at a wetland and coastal
JaLTER-site in eastern Hokkaido (Akkeshi).
Capacity of this tour is 20 individuals.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Akkeshi Marine Station of Hokkaido University is located on the
shore of Akkeshi Bay, on the Pacific Coast of the eastern part of Hokkaido
Island, Japan. It was established in 1931 for biological research on marine
animals and plants in this region.
Akkeshi Bay is connected with a shallow estuary, Akkeshi-ko, at the
bayhead and with the Pacific Ocean at the baymouth. Most of its coast is rocky
shore, although it also has some sandy beaches. Akkeshi Bay is strongly
affected by the cold current 'Oyashio' which flows down from Bering Sea through
Kamchatka. This area and its vicinity have a rich fauna and flora of boreal
species, which indicates characteristic features different from the other
coastal aras of Japan.

Arrival at Akkeshi either
(1)
via Kushiro Airport (KUH) or (2) via New Chitose Airport (CTS) and by train
from Chitose to Akkeshi (5 hr by express train).
[Note: to check in at Akkeshi for the group dinner on the September 2nd, you should arrive at KUH by 3pm (option 1) or at CTS by
11am (option 2)]

Sep. (Sat) AM: Fied excursion to coastal areas by Research Vessel “Misago-maru”
PM: A short
scientific session “LTER and integrated research on aquatic and marine
ecosystems”
4th
Sep. (Sun) AM: Field excursion to wetland ecosystems in Bekanbeushi and Kushiro
mires
PM: Transfer to
Sapporo by train (5 hr ride with scenic view).
Estimated
cost
(separated from cost for ILTER meetings in
Sapporo)
Accommodations: 2,000 - 2,600 JPY for 2 nights stay in the
dormitory of Akkeshi Marine Station
(Bedroom shared by 3-8 members). Alternatively, you can also stay in
hotels at downtown (both western and Japanese styles) with a cost of ca.5,000-7,000
JPY per night.
Meals and field trips: ca. 10,000 JPY
Bus and train between Kushiro Airport
and Akkeshi 1,810 JPY
Train between Akkeshi and Sapporo: 9,500 JPY for one way
