Two tenure track positions of associate professor or assistant professor

In 2005, Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science was reorganized into a research faculty; Faculty of Environmental Earth Science (FEES), and a school for education; Graduate School of Environmental Science (GSES).

FEES introduces a tenure track system to provide young researchers with sufficient research environments. FEES is a main organization that provides education at GSES. In 2008, the four Divisions of GSES and Division of Environmental Resources, Graduate School of Agriculture started a Global COE (Center of Excellence) program "Establishment of Center for Integrated Field Environmental Science: Proposing Adaptive Strategies for Earth System" (IFES, FY2008-2012).

The term of this tenure track post is for a period from appointment until March 31, 2013 working as a Global COE associate professor or assistant professor. Successful candidate will be evaluated within this term for the tenured position of associate professor.

Applicants should have research experiences of environmental science (based on earth science, or bioscience, or mateials science), and are willing to carry out cross-disciplinary/integrated research and education, such as elucidation through observation/survey and modeling, of dynamics of climatic system, response of ecosystems to global environmental change and the role of nutrient cycling; development and application of environmental remediation; or impacts of environmental change on the human society. The successful candidate is also expected to take part in the research and career-up programs in Global COE Program.

At first, the successful candidate works as either a Global COE associate professor or Global COE assistant professor belonging to one of the following research teams, namely, Promotion Office of Overseas Research and Student Exchange (Directors: Atsuko Sugimoto and Mamoru Ishikawa) and Task Force of Integrated Modeling (Chief: Yasuhiro Yamanaka). The ideal candidate is expected to obtain enough research career at one of the above research teams, and to become a valuable addition to FEES, performing cross-disciplinary and integrated research, having fresh ideas in mind, in a multidisciplinary collaboration.

Staff members of Section of Integrated Environmental Science are Koji Yamazaki (climate data analysis), Shiro Tsuyuzaki (plant community ecology), Yutaka Watanabe (geochemistry), Seigo Higashi (animal ecology), Kazuhiro Toyoda (geochemistry), Shunitz Tanaka (environmental remediation), Bunshi Fugetgsu (environmental medical chemistry), Tadashi Niioka (environmental medicine), Masaaki Kurasaki (environmental remediation), Jun Hirokawa (atmosphere chemistry), Tatsufumi Okino (marine natural products), Motoyoshi Ikeda (polar climate), Yugo Ono (enviromentology), and Masahiko Fujii (environmental resources science).

The appointee will also teach graduate students subjects from atmospheric/ terrestrial/ marine ecosystems, geochemical cycles, materials science and environmentology at Graduate School of Environmental Science. Division of Environmental Science Development has a main objective to establish a new research system of "Environmental Science" and is coping with the environmental problems offering multidisciplinary education programs such as "Introduction to Global Warming".

Qualifications:
Those who hold doctoral degree in natural science or equivalent working/research experience or more, can apply.

Treatment:
The job type of the appointee will be decided according to the past research/job careers. The Global COE associate/assistant professor will receive research fund of about JPY 800,000 per annum as "Research Grant for Young Scientists" provided by IFES-GCOE. The appointee can apply to Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research and various other research grants. Annual salary and other allowances shall be paid based on the regulations of Hokkaido University.
