Program for promoting participation in the ecological research network between Japan and Taiwan: toward better projection of ecological responses to climate changes (Deadline: October 1st)

Program for promoting participation in the ecological research network between Japan and Taiwan: toward better projection of ecological responses to climate changes

This program aims to facilitate graduate students and young scientists to participate in the ecological research network between Japan and Taiwan. The program contains four sections: lecture course, research talks, group discussion, and presentation of research plan. (1) We will provide lectures to communicate current knowledge and understanding in the research of ecological responses to human-induced environmental changes. (2) We will share the latest research achievement in climate change ecology. (3) Participants will join working groups and plan the launching process of the ecological research network between Japan and Taiwan. (4) Each group will make a presentation on the research plan of cooperative studies. Through these programs, we aim to develop an international research network among graduate students and young scientists.

Location of the venues
Conference Hall, Hokkaido University Sapporo Campus

Timeline
26th Nov (Mon) – 28th Nov (Wed), 2012
The first day (26th), 9:00-18:30: Lecture course, research talk, group discussion
The second day (27th), 9:00-18:30: Lecture course, research talk, group discussion

Summary of the program
Backgrounds
Climate change and other direct drivers (e.g. habitat change and invasive species) are predicted to interactively induce ecological responses at various levels such as interspecific interaction, population and community dynamics, and ecosystem processes. Since these multiple drives may appear with different combinations in different climate regions (e.g. temperate/tropical) and ecosystems (e.g. forest/ocean), comparative studies on ecological responses among different regions and ecosystems will contribute to better understanding the interactive effects of multiple drivers. To achieve such comparative ecological research, we are in a process to develop a research network between Japan and Taiwan, which covers a large geographical scale including diverse climate and biospheres and consists of researchers with various research methods and skills.
In this program, we would like to provide an opportunity for graduate students and young scientists to join actively the launching processes of the ecological research network between Japan and Taiwan. Such an experience would help international collaboration and project management. We also aim to improve the scientific communication skills of Japanese students through interactions with graduate students and young scientists from Taiwan. We are happy to have graduate students who are interested in learning an example of international collaboration in East Asia for development of sciences and environmental management.

Some information of the program
This program has the following four sections. Detailed program will be uploaded later on the web page.

[1] Lecture course (Morning and Afternoon sessions in the 1st and 2nd days)
Specialists from Japan and Taiwan will give a series of lectures on loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, long-term observational research in ecology, and skills in mathematical modeling and statistical analysis in population and community ecology.

[2] Research talk (Morning and Afternoon sessions in the 1st and 2nd days)
Young scientists from Japan and Taiwan will give research talks concerning their latest achievement in climate change ecology of which topics include observation, experiments, modeling, and analysis.

[3] Group discussion (Afternoon sessions in the 1st and 2nd days)
Participants will be allocated to several groups (e.g. forest and marine systems). We will facilitate graduate students to join the launching process of the ecological research network. We will also have poster presentation time for graduate students.

[4] Presentation of research plan (3rd day)
Graduate students in each group will give presentation on the research plan of cooperative studies, and all of the participants will discuss on these plans.
